The simple explanation

When a new technology category starts appearing in homes and businesses, someone has to install, configure, maintain, and explain it, and for years almost nobody specializes. An operator who becomes "the person" for that category in a region gets referrals from every confused buyer and every retailer with no service arm, at rates generalists can't charge.
A closer look at refurbishment business
Refurbishment margin is a spread: buy a used or broken device cheap (trade-ins, wholesale lots, returns), spend a known amount on parts, testing, and grading, then resell it 'certified' well below new but well above cost. The per-unit gross margin is resale price minus (acquisition + refurb + warranty reserve). The leverage is sourcing and grading discipline (landed cost per device and the yield of A/B-grade units) plus trust: a warranty lets you charge more. The real risks are that device values depreciate weekly (inventory you hold too long loses money), plus return and defect rates and thin margins that punish sloppy triage. That is why marketplaces like Back Market push the capital-light version, taking a commission while third-party refurbishers carry the inventory risk.
